Tens of thousands of viewers tuned in to Region 8 News at 10 Tuesday night to watch a turkey fryer explode. Well, it didn’t. Some call it an epic failure. Others call it great live television. Our biggest mistake is that we over promised a fiery end to our bird and what happens when you cook one the wrong way. Instead, we showed what happens when things don’t go as planned on live television. Our point was still made. We wanted to demonstrate how dangerous turkey fryers can be when you don’t follow instructions.
All of the ingredients were there: the turkey was frozen, too much oil, and a leaky pot to name a few. All are a combination for disaster. After much discussion we believe the oil wasn’t hot enough and too much of it on the burner at once put the fire out. We could have staged the entire event to make sure it caught fire, but we are not in the business of staging events.
Earlier in the day we cooked a turkey in the fryer according to directions and had some flame ups. It goes to show just how unpredictable turkey fryers can be and why you have to pay close attention to what you’re doing. We are certainly thankful no one was hurt during our demonstration. The Jonesboro Fire Department deserves a big thanks for allowing us not only to come out to the Arkansas Fire Academy’s training facility, but to help us in our demonstration.
If you do decide to fire up the turkey fryer over the holidays, here are some tips to proper turkey fryer safety from the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
