2010: The Year Facebook Dethroned Google as King of the Web [STATS]

When viral vids become news

A neighbor with a camera caught this NYC Sanitation crew pulling a front end loader out of a snowbank and into a parked SUV.  The video hit Youtube and then broadcast news the next day.

Here's the original video (strong language warning!)

Here's CNN's story from American Morning:

Here's WABC TV's coverage of the incident the next day:

Nice article from Poynter about KAIT's social media efforts

Our social media efforts at KAIT were recently recognized in an article from Poynter.  While my  name was mentioned in the story, I had very little to do with our great social media presence.  The entire Region 8 News staff took the bull by the horns as they say and ran with it.  My only part is clearing the hurdles in front of them as they improve our product.  Anyways, it's nice for us to be noticed!

Turkey Fryer Mishaps and Other Musings (Commentary)

Tens of thousands of viewers tuned in to Region 8 News at 10 Tuesday night to watch a turkey fryer explode.  Well, it didn’t.  Some call it an epic failure.  Others call it great live television.  Our biggest mistake is that we over promised a fiery end to our bird and what happens when you cook one the wrong way.  Instead, we showed what happens when things don’t go as planned on live television.  Our point was still made.  We wanted to demonstrate how dangerous turkey fryers can be when you don’t follow instructions.

All of the ingredients were there: the turkey was frozen, too much oil, and a leaky pot to name a few.  All are a combination for disaster.  After much discussion we believe the oil wasn’t hot enough and too much of it on the burner at once put the fire out.  We could have staged the entire event to make sure it caught fire, but we are not in the business of staging events.

Earlier in the day we cooked a turkey in the fryer according to directions and had some flame ups.  It goes to show just how unpredictable turkey fryers can be and why you have to pay close attention to what you’re doing.  We are certainly thankful no one was hurt during our demonstration.  The Jonesboro Fire Department deserves a big thanks for allowing us not only to come out to the Arkansas Fire Academy’s training facility, but to help us in our demonstration.

If you do decide to fire up the turkey fryer over the holidays, here are some tips to proper turkey fryer safety from the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

Region 8 News joins a long and prestigious list of television stations and networks that have had events not go as planned on live TV.

I love small towns. On a city council's agenda next week: a 3 way stop at Danny Dunigan's house.

A round on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

I had the opportunity to play a round on the Legends Course at Capitol Hill just outside Montgomery.  The course is one of the most beautiful I have ever played.

Big Airplanes. Smaller Airport

Universal Asset Management is a company at the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport that buys airliners and sells them off part by part. They recently flew a Boeing 747 into the airport. I understand it did seven touch and go's before landing permanently! They have a number of other jets in various stages of dis-assembly from 727's, 737's to Airbus 320's. It's worth a few minutes off the beaten path to take a look.
